THE OLDER SYSTEM
Chaldean Numerology Calculator
The Babylonian system Cheiro taught: letters valued 1 to 8 by sound, no 9, and every name read as a compound number before it reduces. Your Lo Shu grid and Kua number come from the same birth date.
How Chaldean Numerology Works
Chaldean numerology is the older of the two Western systems. The Pythagorean method numbers the alphabet in order (A=1 to I=9, then round again); the Chaldean method, which Cheiro set out in his 1926 Book of Numbers, gives each letter a value from 1 to 8 according to its sound, and never uses 9, which it treats as a complete, sacred number that belongs to no letter.
- The name you use. Chaldean reads the name people actually call you, signatures included, not the full name on a birth certificate. A married name, a nickname or a stage name each has its own number.
- Compound before single. The letters of a name add to a total such as 23 or 31. That two-digit compound number is read first, from Cheiro's table of 10 to 52, and only then reduced to a single digit. Two names with the same single number can carry very different compounds.
- Each word on its own. A first name, a surname and the whole name are all read, because people use them separately.
- Birth number. The day of the month you were born is the number you cannot change. Cheiro's advice was to use a form of your name whose number agrees with it.
Chaldean Numerology Chart
Letter values in the Chaldean system. There is no column for 9.
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A I J Q Y | B K R | C G L S | D M T | E H N X | U V W | O Z | F P |
Worked example: CHEIRO is C3 + H5 + E5 + I1 + R2 + O7 = 23, the Royal Star of the Lion, which reduces to 5. A Pythagorean reading of the same name gives 3 + 8 + 5 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 40, a 4: a different number, which is why the two systems should never be mixed in one reading.
Compound Numbers 10 to 52
Cheiro's readings of the compound numbers, in our words. A total above 52 is added once more (68 becomes 14) until it falls inside the table; a name that adds to less than 10 has only its single number.
| Number | Name | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | The Wheel of Fortune ✦ | Honour, faith and self-confidence, with a rise or a fall decided by how you use them. A name that becomes known, for good or ill. |
| 11 | The Clenched Hand | A warning of hidden dangers, trials and treachery from others. It asks for care in whom you trust. |
| 12 | The Sacrifice | Anxiety of mind and the risk of being used for other people's plans. Guard against becoming the victim of someone else's scheme. |
| 13 | Upheaval | Change and power rather than bad luck. Used well it brings transformation; used carelessly it brings the collapse of what was built. |
| 14 | Movement | Fortunate for money, speculation and dealings with people, but with risk from natural forces and from over-confidence. Luck that needs steady hands. |
| 15 | The Magician ✦ | Eloquence, charm and gifts in music, art or speech. A lucky number for obtaining money and favours, with a pull toward using charm for its own ends. |
| 16 | The Shattered Tower | A warning of accidents and the defeat of plans, often through a fall from a height one had climbed. Planning ahead softens it. |
| 17 | The Star of the Magi ✦ | A deeply spiritual number: the person rises above trials and leaves a name that outlasts them. Peace, love and immortality of reputation. |
| 18 | The Materialist | The hardest compound number: quarrels, deception from friends and enemies alike, danger from fire, flood or storm. It calls for calm and plain dealing. |
| 19 | The Prince of Heaven ✦ | The sun shining on your plans: happiness, success, esteem and honour. One of the most fortunate numbers. |
| 20 | The Awakening | A call to action for some larger purpose. Delays and obstacles are likely, but not material failure, and the purpose eventually comes clear. |
| 21 | The Crown of the Magi ✦ | Advancement, honours and general success after a long fight. Victory arrives, but it is earned. |
| 22 | Blinded by Folly | A warning of illusion: a good person who refuses to see danger around them. It asks for clear judgement and fewer rosy assumptions. |
| 23 | The Royal Star of the Lion ✦ | Success, help from people in authority and protection from above. One of the most fortunate numbers in Cheiro's table. |
| 24 | Fortunate Associations ✦ | Help from people of rank and position, and gain through love and partnership. Good fortune that arrives through other people. |
| 25 | Strength Through Experience | Not an easy early life, but the lessons learned turn into real strength. Benefits come from observation and from trial. |
| 26 | Grave Warnings | Disasters brought about by trusting the wrong people: bad advice, bad partnerships, bad speculation. Keep your own counsel and your own money. |
| 27 | The Sceptre ✦ | Authority, power and command, with the reward of a productive mind. Carry out your own ideas rather than deferring to others. |
| 28 | Contradictions | Great promise and great loss sit together: gains undone by trust in others, by competition or by law. The lesson is to begin again with more care. |
| 29 | Uncertainties | Treachery, deception and grief caused by the people closest to you. Patience and a slow trust are its remedies. |
| 30 | Thoughtful Deduction | Mental superiority and a retiring, reflective nature. Neither lucky nor unlucky in itself: everything depends on what the mind is turned to. |
| 31 | The Recluse | Like 30, but more self-contained and more alone. Not a fortunate number for worldly success, though a rich one for the inner life. |
| 32 | Magical Power ✦ | Fortunate when you hold to your own opinions and plans. The moment you follow someone else's advice, the luck turns. |

✦ marks the numbers Cheiro called fortunate. Numbers he gave no separate reading repeat the earlier number they resemble (33 reads as 24, 34 as 25, and so on).
Chaldean vs Pythagorean Numerology
Both systems turn letters into numbers; they disagree on which numbers, which name and what to keep. Pythagorean assigns 1 to 9 in alphabet order, reads the full birth name, splits it into Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers (all letters, vowels, consonants) and keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers. Chaldean assigns 1 to 8 by sound, reads the name in use, keeps the compound number as a reading in its own right and reduces everything else to a single digit.

Lo Shu Grid Calculator
The Lo Shu grid places the digits of your date of birth on the Chinese magic square, where every row, column and diagonal adds to 15. Indian numerologists read it alongside the Chaldean numbers because both work from the same date. Enter your birth date in the calculator above and the grid is drawn for you, with its arrows.
- Rows are the planes of mind (4-9-2), emotion (3-5-7) and practical life (8-1-6).
- Columns are thought (4-3-8), will (9-5-1) and action (2-7-6).
- Diagonals are determination (4-5-6, the Golden Yog) and spirituality (2-5-8, the Silver Yog).
- Zeros are dropped. A number that appears once is a strength; two or three times, a strength that runs to excess; an empty square is a lesson the life sets.
| Line | All three present | All three missing |
|---|---|---|
| 4-9-2 | Arrow of Intellect: A quick, retentive mind that learns easily and reasons well. | Arrow of Poor Memory: Ideas slip away unless they are written down; routine and notes do the remembering. |
| 3-5-7 | Arrow of Emotional Balance: Feelings are felt fully and handled well; a natural steadiness under pressure. | Arrow of Hypersensitivity: Criticism lands hard and moods swing; thick skin has to be grown rather than inherited. |
| 8-1-6 | Arrow of Practicality: Good with hands, money and the physical world; plans get finished. | Arrow of Impracticality: Big ideas without the follow-through; practical partners and systems make the difference. |
| 4-3-8 | Arrow of the Planner: Organised, methodical and able to see the whole shape of a project before it starts. | Arrow of Confusion: Several plans at once and none of them finished; one goal at a time works best. |
| 9-5-1 | Arrow of Will-power: Persistence that outlasts obstacles; once decided, rarely deflected. | Arrow of Frustration: Hopes that run ahead of results; patience with slower progress is the lesson. |
| 2-7-6 | Arrow of Activity: Energy to act on what is thought and felt; things get done, sometimes too many at once. | Arrow of Passivity: Waiting for the right moment that never quite comes; small first steps break the pattern. |
| 4-5-6 | Arrow of Determination: The rarest arrow: ambition backed by the stamina to see it through, and the ability to recover from any setback. | Arrow of Procrastination: Decisions deferred until they are made for you; deadlines set by others help. |
| 2-5-8 | Arrow of Spirituality: An inner life that steadies the outer one: faith, intuition and calm in a crisis. | Arrow of Scepticism: Nothing is believed until it is proved; a useful mind that can miss what cannot be measured. |
Kua Number Calculator
The Kua number comes from Eight Mansions feng shui, not from numerology, but it uses the same birth date, so the calculator above gives it when you choose the male or female formula. It sorts everyone into the East group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) or the West group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8) and names four lucky directions to face, sleep and work toward, and four to avoid.
- Year first. The feng shui year starts at Li Chun, around February 4. Born on January 20, 1990? Your Kua year is 1989.
- Men: add the last two digits of the year, reduce to one digit, subtract from 10 (from 9 if born in 2000 or later). A 5 becomes 2.
- Women: add the last two digits, reduce, add 5 (6 from 2000 on), reduce again. A 5 becomes 8.
| Kua | Group | Trigram | Success | Health | Love | Growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | East | Kan (Water) | Southeast | East | South | North |
| 2 | West | Kun (Earth) | Northeast | West | Northwest | Southwest |
| 3 | East | Chen (Wood) | South | North | Southeast | East |
| 4 | East | Sun (Wood) | North | South | East | Southeast |
| 6 | West | Chien (Metal) | West | Northeast | Southwest | Northwest |
| 7 | West | Tui (Metal) | Northwest | Southwest | Northeast | West |
| 8 | West | Ken (Earth) | Southwest | Northwest | West | Northeast |
| 9 | East | Li (Fire) | East | Southeast | North | South |
Success is the direction to face at a desk; health is where the top of the head points in bed; love is for the bedroom and the front door where possible; growth is the direction for study. The four unlucky directions (mishaps, five ghosts, six killings and total loss) are the other four of the compass, and the calculator lists them for your number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chaldean numerology?
The older of the two Western systems, traced to Babylon and popularised by the palmist Cheiro in the early 1900s. Letters take the values 1 to 8 by their sound rather than their place in the alphabet, 9 is never assigned to a letter, and a name is read twice: first as the compound number its letters add to (10 to 52), then as the single digit that compound reduces to.
How is Chaldean numerology calculated?
Add the Chaldean value of every letter in the name you go by (A, I, J, Q, Y = 1; B, K, R = 2; C, G, L, S = 3; D, M, T = 4; E, H, N, X = 5; U, V, W = 6; O, Z = 7; F, P = 8). The total is your compound number; add its digits to get the single number. Read each word of the name on its own as well as the whole. The birth number is simply the day of the month you were born.
Why does Chaldean numerology have no 9?
In the Chaldean tradition 9 was treated as a sacred, complete number that belonged to the divine rather than to any letter. A name can still reduce to 9 as a total, and 9 as a birth number (born on the 9th, 18th or 27th) is read like any other.
Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?
The name you are known by. That is the main practical difference from the Pythagorean system, which reads the full name on the birth certificate. If people call you Beth and you sign Beth Carter, enter Beth Carter. You can run both and compare.
What is a compound number?
The two-digit total of a name or date before it is reduced. Cheiro held that the compound reveals the hidden influence behind the single digit, and his table gives a reading for each number from 10 to 52. Totals above 52 are added once more until they fall inside the table.
Is Chaldean numerology more accurate than Pythagorean?
Neither has evidence behind it; both are traditions for reflection. Chaldean readers argue their letter values follow sound, and that reading the name actually used makes more sense than a birth certificate nobody calls you by. Pythagorean readers prefer the simpler alphabet order and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which Chaldean does not keep.
How do I calculate a Lo Shu grid?
Write out your date of birth as digits (day, month, four-digit year), drop any zeros, and place each digit in its square on the Lo Shu magic square: 4 9 2 across the top, 3 5 7 in the middle, 8 1 6 along the bottom. Numbers that appear are strengths, repeats are that strength in excess, empty squares are lessons. A full row, column or diagonal is an arrow of strength; an empty one is an arrow of weakness. The calculator above draws it for you.
How is the Kua number calculated?
Add the last two digits of your birth year and reduce to one digit. Men born before 2000 subtract that from 10 (from 9 if born in 2000 or later); women add 5 (6 from 2000 on) and reduce again. A result of 5 becomes 2 for men and 8 for women. The year follows the feng shui solar calendar, which starts on about February 4, so a January birthday belongs to the previous year.
What are the East and West groups?
Kua numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9 are the East group, whose lucky directions are north, east, southeast and south. Kua numbers 2, 6, 7 and 8 are the West group, whose lucky directions are northeast, southwest, west and northwest. Each person has four lucky and four unlucky directions within their group.
